Operations in Cold Temperatures

Seably 14 minutes

Working onboard a ship always includes different risks and hazardous situations. But working in cold conditions makes a difficult working environment even worse. The cold, in combination with the wind, can be extreme at sea, and you have to be aware of how your body reacts to the cold.

In this course, you'll get an introduction to working onboard in cold temperatures. We will cover some risks and hazards of working in cold conditions, you'll read about frostbite, wind chill factor, hypothermia and precautions for deck equipment, and how to protect yourself and your colleagues. If you don't take the signals of your body seriously, wear the correct clothes and PPE, and follow the decided safety measurements, the consequences can be very severe – even fatal.
