As mentioned earlier, two different regulations lay the foundation of safe ballast water handling, and all vessels must comply with at least one. However, there are two more alternatives. One can choose not to use any ballast water, or decide to have an isolated system. For an isolated system, the vessels have a connecting pipe to a shore facility that supplies and discharges clean ballast water directly. Neither of these options is widespread or well thought out.
