Harbour tugs are fascinating, adventurous and complex. A tugboat Captain must well know the theory surrounding these vessels and, even more, must have the ability to shape it with his own experience in the environment in which he works, considering the numerous variables and then adapt everything to the style of manoeuvre of the pilot on duty. Not everyone can stand out in this work. The Port Tug Course deals with important topics; as we always say: we propose the theory actually necessary for practice.

Due to the nature of the work environment onboard ships, risks and hazards tend to be unavoidable. The ISM Code was introduced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to help in creating a standard for safety. Companies are nowadays required to provide ships with a safety management system that highlights the procedures that should be followed on board to ensure the protection of life, ship, and the environment. Additionally, safety culture is introduced both ashore and on board to assist with the continuous improvement of safety-related issues.

This training is specifically designed so that the participant can acquire the necessary knowledge and skills relating to the legislation and obligations for companies that carry out shipments, loading, unloading, stowage, packaging and any other activity related to the maritime transport of dangerous goods.

Ships are inherently dangerous workspaces, made doubly so by the fact that they move and rock while underway. During any operation, it is imperative that those involved are adequately protected from injury by use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) so that they are less likely to become injured.

Anchoring is one of the most frequent operations carried out onboard different types of ships. It is an extremely important and dangerous procedure which requires full knowledge and understanding in addition to proper training. Several factors influence the anchoring operation and various methods are used to ensure the best results. With that said, it is of paramount importance for all crew members regardless of rank, to know the proper procedures and use of equipment during such operations.

This course is a free introduction to the key concepts of celestial navigation for mariners. It is divided into three courses, Getting Started in Celestial Navigation, Going Further in Celestial Navigation and Advanced Concepts in Celestial Navigation. It is highly recommended to take these courses in this order.

In this course, we will learn about Generators (Alternators); Power Distribution to users; Synchronisation; Safety; and uncommon Maintenance issues. All these are from a practical perspective to help the Engineer deal with situations on board.

Pilots come onboard ships to assist the Master navigate a ship in the most efficient and safe manner in the specific area and ensure safe arrivals and departures from ports. Pilot boarding is hence considered a crucial operation. Various factors affect this operation deeming whether it will be successful or result in a casualty or disaster. International rules and regulations have stipulated the requirements for pilot boarding arrangements in order to ensure successful pilotage operations and reduce the risk to life.
