Safety Signs

Onboard your yacht it is important that signs and notices are thoroughly placed to indicate where particular attention is required. Do pay attention - these signs are usually not as easily spottable onboard yachts due to aesthetic reasons especially in guest areas. The signs could be notices about the contents of various rooms or different containers/compartments etc. and may be very small inside the interior.

Safety signs should be classified in a system consisting of:

  • Signs with orders.
  • Signs with prohibitions.
  • Warning signs.
  • Rescue signs.
  • Fire signs.
  • Safety and Fire equipment signs.

All these types should be made following international standards. These often include symbols, pictures and drawings in place of text, to ensure all nationalities will understand them. Reflective and luminous materials can also be used to promote visibility.

Unfortunately, safety signs are usually small onboard yachts due to aesthetics, therefore it is of extreme importance for the crew to know exactly where the safety equipment is. In the right-hand corner of this image, we can see a small safety sign on the bottom of the cupboard.
