Nitrogen makes up to 78% of the atmosphere surrounding us, it is a colourless and odourless gas and is used to provide an unreactive atmosphere.

This gas is the purest inert gas medium, hence why it is the preferred solution onboard ships where the possibility of cargo contamination is present. It is important to note that Nitrogen itself is not toxic, but its presence reduces the oxygen in the area which in turn results in danger to life.

Nitrogen systems onboard are required in order to ensure that ships are compliant with the various regulations and to ensure the protection of the transportation of sensitive and flammable cargoes.

Having said that, it is of paramount importance for crew working on these types of ships to know the hazards of Nitrogen and its proper uses. Proper knowledge, as with everything onboard ships, ensures avoidance of injury or damage to the ship, and most importantly, saves lives.

Nitrogen is an atom, one of the simplest chemicals to be found in nature.
