Communication is extremely important onboard ships. Proper communication will ensure the safety of the crew, ship, and the environment, especially during specific operations. It is therefore of utmost importance for every crew member to be able to communicate with each other and understand the limitations of communication (such as misunderstanding). To ensure the best communication possible, the crew should keep in mind the following when sending a message or receiving one:
Most importantly no seafarers should say ‘Yes Sir’ or ‘Copy’ to a message which they have not fully understood since a timely communicated misunderstanding can avoid accidents and incidents from happening onboard.
