Aggressive people who resort to violence or are threatening to do so is another type of emergency you, unfortunately, have to be prepared to face when working onboard. People who become aggressive or try to take over the crew's tasks can pose a great danger to the safety of others as they often affect others.
Only a few percent of the guests pose any threat in this regard. Most are quiet and behave well. Aggression is most common in younger men, especially if they are in groups. Women's share of violence has increased in recent years but is still very low compared with men's share.
Narcissistic and antisocial personality disorders have become more common. Criminals often exhibit behaviour that can be explained by these disorders. The most difficult to protect oneself against, is an intentional illegal act, such as terrorism or organised crime.
Of course, there can also be other reasons why people become aggressive. Usually, these temporary moments of confusion are caused by excessive intake of alcohol or drugs. But more or less major life crises, such as divorce, bullying, social exclusion, loss of relatives, envy, etc. can cause such frustration that the risk of aggression increases.
Another interesting phenomenon is that some people see the yacht as a free zone where it is free to drink, let loose and behave in a completely different way than onshore. People with narcissistic and antisocial personality disorders are characterised by the following:
Have a great need to be the centre of attention,
Have difficulty following social norms and lack respect for the rights of others,
Have difficulty understanding how other people feel (lack of empathy),
Are impulsive and reckless,
Are easily irritated and manipulative, and
Turn to violence to feel the power, even though the situation does not warrant it.
