Communication is vital onboard. Precise communication will ensure the safety of the crew, yacht and the environment, especially during specific operations. It is, therefore, of utmost importance for every crew member to be able to communicate with each other and understand the limitations of communication (such as misunderstanding). To ensure the best communication possible, the crew should keep in mind the following when sending a message or receiving one:
Ensure that the instructions or questions are audible, detailed, and focused on the specific task.
Pieces of information should never be hidden from team members or the team leader because there is the thought that it might be unpleasant or cause trouble.
Ensure that the message is genuinely understood, and if not, an explanation should be asked for to avoid confusion and further delay.
Ensure that the appropriate means of communication are established and checked.
Most importantly, no seafarers should say ‘Yes Sir’ or ‘Copy’ to a message they have not fully understood since a timely communicated misunderstanding can prevent accidents and incidents from happening onboard.
