Introduction to Fatigue and Stress

Fatigue and stress are extremely common onboard ships and tend to affect crew that have been onboard for a longer period. The crew tend to start feeling stressed and fatigued toward the end of their contracts.

Since fatigue seriously reduces the seafarers' mental and physical capabilities, crew members onboard are at risk of injury due to human error.

Simple mistakes that can endanger the life of everyone on board become more likely to happen. In the last few years, an increase in human error was observed related to fatigue and the lack of crew engagement. Fatigue and stress remain the main contributing factors to incidents onboard.

You must always be fit for duty.

An active social life on board results in a positive impact on the seafarer’s welfare and promotes good relationships onboard. An active social life can also have a detrimental effect on the amount of quality rest you have, increasing fatigue.
