Individual's Rights and Responsibilities Onboard

It is every seafarer’s right to have good working terms and conditions. Additionally, other rights include but are not limited to depending on the contract:

  1. Entitlement to work and live in a harassment-free environment.
  2. Regular working hours of duty: Eight hours a day, Monday to Friday (depending on contract).
  3. Entitlement to get paid any overtime.
  4. Resting hours should be 10 hours rest in any 24 hours, and 77 hours in any 7 days as per MLC 2006.
  5. Travel costs at the end of a contract to return home should be covered by the company.
  6. Entitlement to medical treatment paid by the company if you are discharged owing to sickness or injury.
  7. Entitlement to sick pay and compensation when discharged due to injury as a result of an accident on board.
  8. Entitlement to 14 weeks of maternity pay if you get pregnant.
  9. Right to join a trade union.
  10. Right, to receive wages on time.

Most importantly, every individual has a right to be shown respect. Having said that, every seafarer has social responsibilities towards their fellow crew members. 

Good human relations onboard will make a stronger and happier Team!

Social Responsibilities

Social responsibility can be simply described as a responsibility that every individual needs to fulfil for the greater good of society or the team. Therefore, every seafarer, when taking action, should keep in mind the safety of the yacht, its crew members and the environment. Examples of social responsibilities onboard include but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring a healthy working environment.
  • Ensuring that no bullying or harassment is coming from your side.
  • Have acceptance and tolerance of every fellow crew member regardless of rank, race and gender.
  • Show respect to every single crew member.
  • Be kind and friendly.
  • Encourage positive human relations, etc.
