From Concept to Content in Record Time! Fire Safety Training for Alternative Fuelled Vehicles on Ro-Ro Vessels

News|19 April 2023

Several major fires break out on Ro-Ro ships every year and there are many public concerns about AFVs being dangerous. This is due to the enormous growth of the AFV fleet, the potential fire risks of these vehicles and a high uncertainty on the associated fire characteristics.

Lash Fire is an International Research Project bringing together experts from 25 organisations in 13 EU countries. The aim is to develop and demonstrate innovative solutions for fire prevention and management to reduce risk and improve safety on board Ro-Ro ships, as well as to bust myths and educate seafarers about fire in Electric Vehicles or AFVs (Alternatively Fuelled Vehicles).

The truth is, fires can happen on any type of vehicle, the risk is not the AFV itself. However, there is a lack of knowledge and research on how to prevent AFV fires on Ro-Ro ships and a lack of knowledge on how to fight the AFV fire itself.

Education and Training are Key.

Lash Fire needed to get the essential training directly into the hands of the seafarers on Ro-Ro ships. They chose Seably, as we have 60,000 seafarers already registered on our platform and direct communication with 600 system administrators. As well as this, Lash Fire have made the course completely free so any Seafarer that wants to do the course can register and complete it without paying any licence fee.

Jessica Süßmilch, Head of our Content Team, worked closely with Lash Fire to get the course to seafarers as quickly as possible, with some of the initial stages ready to go live within 48 hours!

Crew Training on Effective Manual AFV Firefighting, includes an Introduction, Fire Team Protection, First Response, Fire Fighting Methods, Manual Fire Fighting of Gas Vehicles and Post-fire.

Each section is augmented with excellent quality video footage full of practical firefighting demonstrations as well as audio, clear supporting text and bulleted tips. Lash Fire has also made use of a new Seably feature enabling content providers to attach documents for learners to download and reference in the future. In this case, it is the EMSA Guidance for the Safe Carriage of AFVs in Ro-Ro spaces of Cargo and Passenger Ships.

Lash Fire have recently launched a Crew Training on Effective Manual AFV Firefighting course on Seably

Lash Fire were amazed at how quickly and expertly we were able to deliver on our promise. They also couldn’t believe it was free (like the best things in life)!

For us, high-quality content is the lifeblood of our business (if the proposed content isn’t viable or doesn’t benefit the seafarer, we simply won't host it). We are driven to support expert content providers to make the courses as interesting, interactive and impactful as possible. Through design, integration, visuals, videos, content checking, copywriting or whatever is required to create a quality experience that meets our high standards and those of our ISO 9001/ 14001/45001 and DNV 595 certifications.

Ultimately, without quality courses from maritime experts in their fields, we wouldn't have a product to sell to licence holders. No two content providers are the same, but our agile nature and individualised approach enable us to treat each one uniquely, delivering what they need in the most effective way.
