Seably Adds 112 New Courses to Keep Seafarers in our Hearts and Minds

News|18 May 2023

It's fair to say that pretty much everyone who works for Seably is a neophile; a lover of new or novel things. Our business moves at a fast pace, constantly evolving and pushing to the next level, and without a certain amount of hunger or curiosity, we wouldn’t have experienced the rapid growth we have today.

Learning Seaman specialise in courses aimed at seafarers' mental health, well-being and resilience.

The well-being of seafarers should NOT be on the list of new or novel things, yet our industry is where it is, and sad to say that advancements in this area are few and far between. When we heard that Learning Seaman was interested in partnering with us to bring courses dedicated to seafarers' well-being to our platform, the decision was an instant and unanimous YES and HOW SOON?

Learning Seaman is dedicated to seafarers' well-being, mental health and resilience. The courses educate and entertain seafarers to help them develop emotional resilience and manage stress. In a tough and relentless job with challenging working conditions, social isolation and blurred downtime, finding a way to take care of well-being is the key to not only being happy and healthy, but productive and safe.

What we especially liked about Learning Seaman was the multicultural approach and the variety of content. They have all the courses you’d expect to see to support wellness, such as personal development, nutrition, health, fitness and yoga. But also, interesting and fun courses that take care of the well-being that comes from enjoying and appreciating the world around you; through travel, art, movies, biographies, business and finance, classical studies, board games, theatre and more!

Not only this but the courses are created by their own dedicated team of qualified human resources experts, academics, artists, clinical nutritionists, journalists as well as professionals who benefit from a deep and personal understanding of the maritime and education industry. Our visions are aligned with a desire to do what's right for seafarers, putting their needs first and looking for training that will equip them with everything they need.

The founder of Learning Seaman, Yofis Florentin, told us, “Our team is constantly growing to accommodate seafarers’ needs and wishes, to improve their well-being and provide continuous improvement while onboard. We have a big vision, and when I happened to come across Tomas Lindberg, Global Head of Sales and Support at Seably on LinkedIn, I immediately did some research!”

The founder of Learning Seaman likes Seably's modern approach to training seafarers.

Yofis added, “I liked Seably’s modern approach to training and the comprehensive accessibility for seafarers both on and offline. I could see from the acquisition of WellAtSea, that this was a business that was brave enough not to follow the crowd, big enough to have an impactful number of seafarers, and small enough to be proactive and retain a flexible and personal touch with partners and clients. In short, exactly what we needed.”

For us, the biggest challenge with Learning Seaman was how to get the huge amount of content onto our platform as quickly and efficiently as possible. Luckily, like us, they take quality very seriously and benefit from their own in-house production team. The content was already available, accessible and mixed-format with a variety of video, audio, and podcast that we could use.

We have been working away behind the scenes for several months, spending around 1.5-2.5 hours per course, re-working their extensive content from scratch to ensure that it fits perfectly within the Seably Builder and follows the required quality standards. This way we have been able to ensure it works for our seafarers and meets the high standards of our ISO certifications; including quizzes, text blocks, interactivity etc. To date, we have 90 courses live and another 22 to go in order to create the final 112 new Learning Seaman courses for our seafarers to benefit from.

Explore the courses here. We’d love to know what you think! We especially love the fresh approach of the travel guides to Port Cities around the world, which should be enough to inspire any seafarer looking for ways to spend a day off the ship!

We’ll be bringing more news on our recommended courses for well-being, mental health, nutrition and travel in blogs soon. Sign up here to get weekly updates straight to your email.
