As vessels continue to increase in size, the power demand rises too, so more powerful engines and other equipment items must also be installed. The increased size and demand on power requires the use of higher voltages on board, enabling the efficient and effective transfer of energy throughout the vessel.

During this course, you will gain an understanding of onboard High Voltage (HV) applications, and how this differs from Low Voltage (LV). You will also explore the dangers associated with high voltage and safety practices when working with, or maintaining HV equipment or installations, as well as the terminology used.

The overall aim of this course is to provide you with an introduction to the knowledge and understanding of the safety requirements of high voltage power systems but does not replace the mandatory requirements as laid down in STCW Regulation III/1 and III/2.
