An introduction to the Inert Gas system and the methods of operation.
Due to the volatile nature of many of the cargoes carried on board tankers, there is a need to reduce the likelihood of fire by some means. The most effective way of doing this in cargo tanks is by reducing the atmospheric oxygen content within the tank to less than is required to support combustion. This is achieved by inerting the tanks.

This incident is based on the experiences of the UK P&I Club. Accidents like the one in this course can and do happen. As you go through this course, ask yourself, "Could this happen on my ship?"

This course builds upon the students a basic understanding of single and three-phase power systems. Progressing the student to understand the physics of electrical power and the instrumentation involved in the measurement of single and three-phase power flow.

This course will explore; what a FRAMO Deep WellPump is, how it is used and the hazards and risks of oil cargo operations when operating it.

The Hand Tools Safety course shows the learner how to safely select, use, maintain and store hand and power tools on board ships. This course identifies the correct PPE to be worn when using tools and the potential consequences of incorrect use of hand tools on board.

This Engine Room Rounds course shows the learner how to conduct rounds of the engine room in a structured way, and what equipment checks to carry out in the machinery spaces of typical large ships.

As an engine room team member you have a vital role. You have to combine an understanding of the ship’s machinery with an awareness of company procedure, while all the time maintaining high safety standards.
In engine room watchkeeping, there is also another factor - teamwork. It is crucial both deck and engineering personnel bear in mind they are part of one team, not just within their own department but with each other. For example, now the majority of main propulsion plants are directly controlled from the bridge, this has brought the deck and engineering departments closer together.

Emergencies and disasters at sea can lead to the loss of human life. When that happens, and if no assistance from the outside has arrived, crews may have to transport deceased colleagues or passengers to holding areas on the vessel in the form of freezers. Unfortunately, minimising the negative impact on crew members, who are engaged in handling deceased human beings is a vastly overlooked issue in the wake of major incidents.

This course is intended for onboard personnel looking to gain knowledge about dangerous gases on ships and the systems used to detect them. The most common types of hazardous gases are explained, as are the detection methods.
