In this short course, we will watch a video of an incident and then analyse it to see what went wrong and what could have been done to prevent this incident.

This incident is based on the experiences of the UK P&I Club. Accidents like the one in this course can and do happen. As you go through this course, ask yourself, "Could this happen on my ship?"

In this course, you will learn about the switchboard and how it, in most cases, is constructed. We will look at different types, and you will learn how they work. You will get to know the idea behind the many wires and why they are needed, and you will gain knowledge about wire dimensioning and how they are connected correctly.

This course guides engineers in carrying out a self-audit to prepare the vessel for inspections (Sire 2.0, RISQ, PSC, Flag State, etc). It helps engineers know the requirements, and the vessel in greater depth within a structured manner.

A successful self-audit requires crew knowledge and preparedness about what is expected to be examined during an inspection. This is for documentation, hardware, critical and emergency operations, and the standards of testing.

An Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS), often referred to as scrubbers, is a device installed onboard marine vessels that literally “scrubs” harmful sulphur oxides from exhaust gases.

The technology is commonly installed on ships seeking compliance options in the face of tighter emissions regulations. Scrubbers have been adopted for compliance within Emission Control Areas near coastlines. They are also being installed to comply with the International Maritime Organization’s global sulphur cap from 1st January 2020.
