The Suez Canal is one of the world's largest and most important shipping routes. In the spring of 2021, it was blocked by a navigation incident onboard the Evergreen container vessel, The Ever Given. This had wide-ranging implications for the shipping industry and global trade as a whole.

It is key to learn from accidents that have occurred to be able to succeed in shipping. This incident is based on the experiences of the UK P&I Club. Accidents like the one in this course can and do happen. As you go through this course, ask yourself, "Could this happen on my ship?"

The International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS) came into force in 2004 as an amendment to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention. It highlights requirements on maritime security including, minimum security arrangements for ships, ports facilities, and government agencies. It specifies the responsibilities of governments, shipping companies, shipboard personnel, and port facility personnel to detect security threats and take preventive measures against security incidents affecting ships or port facilities.

The same experience can be lived entirely differently depending on how one is willing to face it. Therefore, we can say that our mental attitude influences the result of the experience. This Engine Room Rounds course shows the learner how to conduct rounds of the engine room in a structured way, and what equipment checks to carry out in the machinery spaces of typical large ships.

This course is an introduction to the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC) and is directed to all seafarers working on board ships. It is intended to provide basic knowledge of the MLC 2006 required for all personnel working on board ships.
