In this course, we will talk about the deadly dozen. The deadly dozen refers to twelve common conditions that can act as precursors to human error; leading to incidents. These conditions can influence people to make unintentional mistakes.

It is key to learn from accidents that have occurred to be able to succeed in shipping. This incident is based on the experiences of the UK P&I Club. Accidents like the one in this course can and do happen. As you go through this course, ask yourself, "Could this happen on my ship?"

Ships are extremely complex environments, containing various hazards and risks. Due to this, a need arises to make the risks bearable in order to ensure the maximum safety of the crew, the vessel itself, and the environment. In order to achieve this result, a process to identify, evaluate and address all the risks relevant enough to endanger the crew, the vessel, or the environment is created. This risk assessment will ensure a proper analysis of the likelihood and potential consequences of each identified hazard or risk.

The human element is a key component contributing to the safety of life onboard ships and unfortunately, it is also one of the main contributors to a large number of casualties in the maritime industry. This can only be made worse by bad human relations onboard. Therefore, human relations and social responsibilities work hand in hand to mitigate casualties and incidents, by ensuring that the seafarers are in a happy working environment resulting in proper communication and good and effective teamwork.

In this course we will be looking at the role of the gangway watch keeper, the relevant legislation and the security of the vessel.

Active listening is when you give your full attention to the speaker, understand the complete meaning of their message and respond to it. Through active listening, a listener shows interest, respect and consideration to the speaker.

Personnel transfers are hazardous operations that can lead to injury or worse if not completed in as safe a manner as possible. The responsibility of safety for such operations lies with all involved, including those undergoing the personnel transfer.

Chronic unease means noticing those weak danger signals and responding to them in a much stronger way, it means knowing when to think fast and when to think slow, using our expertise to think quickly in familiar situations, but also being able to stand back and take the time to think things through when we need to.

This Engine Room Rounds course shows the learner how to conduct rounds of the engine room in a structured way, and what equipment checks to carry out in the machinery spaces of typical large ships.
