Ships are extremely complex environments, containing various hazards and risks. Due to this, a need arises to make the risks bearable in order to ensure the maximum safety of the crew, the vessel itself, and the environment. In order to achieve this result, a process to identify, evaluate and address all the risks relevant enough to endanger the crew, the vessel, or the environment is created. This risk assessment will ensure a proper analysis of the likelihood and potential consequences of each identified hazard or risk.

This is a course for Maritime leaders, current and future.

This is not a cold course quoting leadership models, it takes the student on a journey through real events in the maritime environment and the learning outcomes that these deliver. students on the course will learn a decision-making Strategy and then see this strategy in use in a real event.

It is important to develop cultural understanding to improve communication across cultures during work and off-work time aboard. Further, understanding cultural differences & similarities as well as reaching a cultural self-awareness level to help the crew avoid and manage conflicts caused by multi-culturalism.

Clear instructions are simple, specific and short but complete. When you give clear instructions, you avoid confusion, rework and wasted time. At the same time, you help your team become confident in doing their job.

Effective leadership varies not only depending on the task, job or function that needs to be accomplished, but also on the profile of the person or group that is being influenced. Good and effective leaders are those who are flexible and adaptive when it comes to their approaches.

Bridge Resource Management is a critical tool for the officer of the watch in order to maintain a safe navigational watch. BRM is the process to use all of the means available to you during critical operations taking into account not only electronic aids to navigation but also any other data provided during the watch and most importantly teamwork.

This course gives additional training for operations in polar waters, underpinning the knowledge gained during STCW polar courses. In this course, deck officers will be given guidance and advice on personal health and safety in polar waters. This course is not meant to be an approved STCW course but an additional training course for onboard learning.

Due to the nature of the work environment onboard ships, risks and hazards tend to be unavoidable. The ISM Code was introduced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to help in creating a standard for safety. Companies are nowadays required to provide ships with a safety management system that highlights the procedures that should be followed on board to ensure the protection of life, ship, and the environment. Additionally, safety culture is introduced both ashore and on board to assist with the continuous improvement of safety-related issues.

In an environment with a speak-up culture, everyone is free and safe to express themselves and feel appreciated for doing so. When you encourage your crew to speak up — and therefore promote a speak-up culture — you empower them, keep them involved and feel confident that their input is valued.

Human element is a key component contributing to the safety of life on board and unfortunately, it is also one of the main contributors to a large number of casualties in the maritime industry. This can be made worse by bad human relations on board. Therefore, human relations and social responsibilities work hand in hand to mitigate casualties and incidents. Ensuring that the seafarers are in a positive working environment results in proper communication and good and effective teamwork.

New crew members joining a ship must be familiarised with their duties and essential information about the ship. This ensures they understand their responsibilities thoroughly before commencing their duties. Proficiency and familiarisation are critical factors in preventing failures and safety hazards. Though all crew personnel joining the ship have to do STCW training, there are several specific instructions which are essential for safe operations on ships.
