Bulk carriers are among the most prolific and most dangerous of vessels sailing in the oceans. This course looks at the typical hazards and dangers of bulk carrier operations and how these are managed on board to promote safer working conditions.

It is key to learn from accidents to be able to succeed in shipping. This incident is based on the experiences of the UK P&I Club. Accidents like the one in this course can and do happen. As you go through this course, ask yourself, "Could this happen on my ship?"

In this course, we will introduce you to the philosophy, processes, and procedures required to support a marine casualty investigation.

This course provides basic knowledge to handle epoxy paint, a thermosetting plastics, onboard. The course aligns with the Swedish Work Environment Authority rules AFS 2011:19.

The IMO SOLAS and MARPOL conventions include regulations for the handling of cargo in packed form classified as dangerous or harmful for the environment with links to the IMDG code (International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code). According to the training provision in the IMDG section 1.3, a training for shore-side personnel shall be trained in General Awareness training. The purpose of this course is to introduce you to the IGF Code. We will follow the fuel's way through the ship. Starting at bunkering to storage and finally, through the fuel system, you will also learn about managing potential risks.

Almost all seafarers have been subjected to hard weather, and they are well aware of the impact and forces that can occur at sea. When the ship starts to pitch and roll in heavy seas, it is obvious that the consequences of such can be severe if the cargo is not correctly stowed and secured. In harsh weather conditions, if necessary, the speed should be reduced, and the course altered. Such precautions may decrease the level of stress, both to cargo and the ship’s structure, by avoiding large movements and heavy exposure to green sea on deck.

The galley is crucial to the operational effectiveness of any ship as it provides food for all crew members. It should be properly and hygienically run to ensure that ship personnel remain healthy and can be looked after properly.

When working onboard, one is exposed to hazards and risks all the time. By raising awareness of the hazards, the likelihood can be decreased and thereby, also the potential risk. This course is intended to provide you with the fundamental knowledge of Risk Assessment onboard and give you a useful tool to handle potential risks.
