This course introduces the Bilge Water Management systems found onboard and explains how they are managed. The course covers the legal requirements under MARPOL regulations as well as the operation of the machinery and correct recording measures to be taken.

Ballast water is essential for ship stability, as it compensates for changes in displacement as cargoes are loaded or discharged. It also helps control trim, list & stability as well as minimising stresses on the ship’s structure. However, over the last 25 years, environmental issues have taken an increasingly high profile. The conveying of organisms across the world and depositing them in regions where they are unwanted has been an unwelcome consequence of ballast water discharge.

It is key to learn from accidents to be able to succeed in shipping. This incident is based on the experiences of the UK P&I Club. Accidents like the one in this course can and do happen. As you go through this course, ask yourself, "Could this happen on my ship?"

Hot works mean any work requiring the use of electric arc or gas welding equipment, cutting burner equipment or other forms of naked flame, as well as heating or spark-generating tools, regardless of where it is carried out on board a ship.

This course will introduce and explain Rule 7 of the International Regulations for Prevention of Collisions at Sea (Rules of the Road).

We all live with hazards every day and as a team, we work hard to try and prevent them by taking sensible precautions every day to reduce our exposure to hazards. Thinking about the hazards that might be around us, is a very human thing to do. It's that sense of caution that makes us look for hazards, work out how to prevent them and best of all, remove them altogether. You can use something called the hierarchy of control to help you do just that. It helps you to think about the choices you can make to deal with all kinds of hazards in a step-by-step way.

This course introduces the basic safety concepts of vessel operations. It covers the safety legislation applicable to ships and the means of compliance with such requirements. Personal safety is also covered including personal routines in many areas of the ship from the Galley to the Engine Room.

This course will introduce and explain Rule 14 of the International Regulations for Prevention of Collisions at Sea (Rules of the Road).

Chronic unease means noticing those weak danger signals and responding to them in a much stronger way, it means knowing when to think fast and when to think slow, using our expertise to think quickly in familiar situations, but also being able to stand back and take the time to think things through when we need to.

Being able to handle the media is not always as easy as you might think. All journalists are trained to get the most out of you and to make you answer their questions. Sometimes it can be hard to know how to handle this interaction.

In this course, you will learn what is a Personal Lifejacket, how to choose the best one for you and how to use it properly. The course follows the U.S. Coast Guard requirements.

The galley is crucial to the operational effectiveness of any ship as it provides food for all crew members. It should be properly and hygienically run to ensure that ship personnel remain healthy and can be looked after properly.
