However, the consequences of poor Ballast Water Management could cause health problems for many people, financial losses for the company, and also harm the world's ecosystems. There is a reason that this convention entered into force. In this course, you are going to learn more about your role and about different methods for handling Ballast Water.

Nitrogen systems onboard are required in order to ensure that ships are compliant with the various regulations and to ensure protection of the transportation of sensitive and flammable cargoes. Nitrogen is the purest inert gas medium, hence why it is the preferred solution onboard ships where the possibility of cargo contamination is present. Having said that, it is of paramount importance for crew working on these types of ships to know the hazards of Nitrogen and its proper uses.

Various documentations onboard assist the crew to follow the correct procedures and ensure that all steps are covered, and nothing is missed prior to entry.

This course strives to explain the risks, procedures and contingencies related to enclosed space entry.

There are hundreds of accidents every year where the worker is in an enclosed space. Over 50% of workers who die in confined spaces are attempting to rescue colleagues. Many of the casualties that have occurred in enclosed spaces on ships have resulted from people entering an enclosed space without proper supervision or adherence to agreed procedures.
