In this course, we will continue looking into Mental Resilience, following on from our first course. We will focus on healthy ways to manage and cope with stress & anxiety. Where possible, we also look at ways to reduce or eliminate sources of stress & anxiety in our lives.

This course will introduce and explain the lights, shapes, and sound signals prescribed under the International Regulations for Prevention of Collisions at Sea (Rules of the Road).

Planned Maintenance Systems (PMS) are vital for efficient maintenance management onboard merchant ships. This introduction provides an overview of the key aspects of PMS, including equipment identification, maintenance task planning, scheduling, work order generation, execution, and performance monitoring. Implementing a well-designed PMS ensures increased reliability, enhanced safety, regulatory compliance, and cost-effective asset management.

Fuel purifiers play a crucial role in the merchant navy, where ships rely on diesel or heavy fuel oil (HFO) for propulsion and power generation. These fuels, although essential, can contain impurities that can lead to engine damage, reduced efficiency, and increased maintenance costs. Fuel purifiers are designed to remove these impurities and ensure the smooth and efficient operation of marine engines.

Fumigation is a critical process employed to eliminate pests, such as insects and rodents, from various types of cargoes, including bulk goods like grain and cereal products, as well as packaged items like cocoa and timber. In the past, fumigation was typically conducted while the vessel was in port, with the crew staying ashore. However, in-transit fumigation has become the prevailing practice today, offering convenience to shippers but also posing certain risks to the crew members onboard.

Bridge Resource Management is a critical tool for the officer of the watch in order to maintain a safe navigational watch. BRM is the process to use all of the means available to you during critical operations taking into account not only electronic aids to navigation but also any other data provided during the watch and most importantly teamwork.

The management of personnel onboard ships is critical to ensure that all training requirements are met, both when on and off the ship. Many training courses are needed to ensure career progression as well as maintaining currency so that vessels are not delayed by non-conformities due to personnel certification.

This assessment not only aids in identifying strengths and areas for improvement but also guides personal and professional development for optimal performance.

The full version of this course is directed to the training of the personnel responsible for the control of the waters on board seagoing vessels according to the most recent international regulations and the good practices in the field.
